Spotlight: CommonSoul Communications

CommonSoul Communications is a mission-driven organization dedicated to providing strategic marketing and communications services to nonprofits and community-focused initiatives. Founded by civic leader and communications expert David W. Brown, the organization operates as a fiscally sponsored project of CultureWorks Greater Philadelphia. This partnership allows CommonSoul to thrive with vital operational support while remaining focused on its mission to strengthen communities through powerful storytelling.

David W. Brown brings a wealth of experience to the work. In addition to leading CommonSoul Communications, he serves as Assistant Dean for Community and Communication at Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication. Recognized nationally for his civic leadership, David was honored by the Obama Administration as a “Champion of Change” for his commitment to empowering nonprofit organizations to create meaningful, sustainable impact.

Under his guidance, CommonSoul Communications has supported dozens of nonprofits in amplifying their stories, deepening their reach, and fostering stronger connections across communities. The organization’s impact continues to grow—fueled by a deep sense of purpose and a strong foundation of values.

Here at CultureWorks, we are proud to have worked with David and CommonSoul Communications since 2013.

In Their Words: A Conversation with David W. Brown

Tell us about your organization or project. What inspired you to start it, and what impact are you hoping to make?
I began partnering with CultureWorks when I launched the first iteration of my consulting practice, originally called The Marketing Collaborative. We received a grant from the Wyncote Foundation to support The Wilma Theater, and CultureWorks provided the ideal infrastructure to receive the grant and enable our work. Since then, we’ve provided marketing counsel to dozens of nonprofits. Today, CultureWorks also supports my ability to serve as Executive Director of the Civic Coalition to Save Lives.

What core values or mission drive your work? What keeps you motivated and grounded in your purpose?
We’re guided by a commitment to helping organizations that strive to make a positive impact. As a pastor, I feel a deep responsibility to support efforts that uplift communities—and that continues to ground my purpose and passion for this work.

How has your relationship with CultureWorks supported your journey?
Our relationship with CultureWorks has been invaluable. While we originally intended to become our own 501(c)(3), operating under CultureWorks’ fiscal sponsorship proved more efficient and effective. Their expert handling of critical back-office operations—from payroll and vendor payments to tax compliance—has allowed me to focus fully on being the face of CommonSoul and leading our work in the community. It’s been worth every penny.

What’s something exciting on the horizon?
We’re currently organizing the Civic Coalition to Save Lives’ annual convening. This event will bring together leaders from the philanthropic, business, civic, and grassroots sectors to discuss efforts to reduce gun violence in Philadelphia. Mayor Cherelle Parker, Public Safety Director Adam Geer, and Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel will join us in reflecting on past efforts and shaping the path forward.
