Magical Realism is most widely known as a literary genre in Latin America that emerged in the late 1960s and 70's. Magical Realism provided writers with the opportunity to critique the rapidly evolving political and social environments of that time while integrating historical mythology and metaphor to help readers see beyond the complex and bizarre consequences of authoritarian reality.
This free workshop will explore several examples of contemporary North American Magical Realism to learn how to apply the practice to the challenges of life in the US in 2025 and beyond. We will also discuss what is and what is not Magical Realism, and why Magical Realism surpasses magical thinking and the escapist fantasy that comprises much of our virtual lives, on all levels. Discussions will also explore why Magical Realism is a form of creative resistance for those who are underserved and marginalized, and how to apply Magical Realism in your personal and professional lives.
This event is presented by Megan Haupt and Hungry Education.
